How to Increase Critical Thinking Skills in Children

In the Roots of Action article “Critical Thinking: How to Grow Your Child’s Mind,” Marilyn Price-Mitchell, PhD discusses ways that parents can help their children to develop a healthy set of critical thinking skills as they grow. Critical thinking is an important part of life that needs to be instilled early on, but it needs to be approached in a way that is fun for kids so that they will really retain the important skills that they are taught. Here is a summary of 5 skills that Dr. Price-Mitchell suggests that parents can help teach their children and her suggestions to aid learning:

  1. Be Clear. It is important for children to understand that it is okay to not understand something, as long as they are communicating their confusion and asking for help when needed.
  1. Be Accurate. In today’s world, it is more important than ever for adults to explain to young ones that everything they hear may not be true. Teach your children the value of research and logical thinking early on.
  1. Be Relevant. It is easy for young minds to wander and lose focus on the subject that is being discussed. Help kids develop sold critical thinking skills by relating different topics of conversation to one another.
  1. Be Logical. Question your children’s points and motives and show them how to logically arise at a conclusion, rather than relying on emotions or unclear information.
  1. Be Fair. This is when it becomes very important to help children understand the value of kindness and empathy, as well as the impact that their choices can have on other human beings. Try to help them understand how they can make decisions that not only put others’ needs and feelings into consideration but also help others.

If you are looking for a highly fun and effective way to build critical thinking skills, consider enrolling your child in one of the International Talent Academy’s arts-based programs. These programs teach and reinforce important real-world values that children need to be happy and successful in life, while letting kids have fun singing, dancing, acting and more.
