Part 3: How to Overcome Procrastination.

YOU NEED TO PROVE TO YOURSELF THAT YOU CAN DO IT

You need to show yourself you can do it, not tell yourself. Things will change when you show yourself that they can. A basketball player on a cold streak can tell himself 1000 times, “I’m a great shooter, I’m going to hit this next one,” but it’s not until he physically hits a shot that his confidence goes up and his touch comes back.

So how do you start hitting shots?

TRY TO INTERNALIZE THE FACT THAT EVERYTHING YOU DO IS A CHOICE

Start by thinking about the terms used in this article. If they resonated with you, write them down. Terms help you clarify the reality of the choices you’re making, expose bad choices, and highlight when it’s most critical to make good ones.

CREATE METHODS TO HELP YOU DEFEAT THE MONKEY

Some possible methods:

  • Solicit external support by telling one or more friends or family members about a goal you’re trying to accomplish and asking them to hold you to it.
  • Create a Panic Monster if there’s not already one in place—if you’re trying to finish an album, schedule a performance for a few months from now, book a space, and send out an invitation to a group of people.

If the methods you set up aren’t working, change them. Set a reminder for a month from now that says, “Have things improved? If not, change my methods.”

AIM FOR SLOW, STEADY PROGRESS—STORYLINES ARE REWRITTEN ONE PAGE AT A TIME

A deeply-ingrained habit like procrastination doesn’t change all at once, it changes one modest improvement at a time. The procrastinator who gets slightly better every week is a totally changed person a year later. The time to start improving is now.

It’s well  within your grasp to overcome or help someone overcome procrastination, as explained in this 3 part blog, start today — you’ve got this!
